Trujillo
Trujillo is the third-largest city in Peru, located on the northwestern coast of the country in the La Libertad Region, approximately 560 kilometers north of Lima. Situated in the fertile Moche River valley on the edge of the Pacific coastal desert, the city has a population of approximately 1 million and serves as the commercial and cultural capital of northern Peru. Trujillo is known as the City of Eternal Spring for its mild and pleasant climate, and is celebrated for its remarkable collection of pre-Columbian archaeological sites and its vibrant tradition of marinera dancing.
The area around Trujillo is one of the most archaeologically rich zones in the entire Americas. The Moche civilization, which flourished on the northern coast of Peru from roughly 100 CE to 800 CE, left behind two of the largest mud-brick structures in the pre-Columbian world: the Huaca del Sol (Pyramid of the Sun) and the Huaca de la Luna (Pyramid of the Moon), located just south of the modern city. These immense adobe pyramids, built in stages over centuries, served as ceremonial and administrative centers. The Huaca de la Luna is particularly remarkable for its extraordinarily vivid polychrome murals depicting mythological scenes with the fearsome Ai Apaec deity, revealed through ongoing archaeological excavations that continue to yield new discoveries.
The subsequent Chimu civilization built Chan Chan, the largest pre-Columbian city in South America and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, on the outskirts of what is now Trujillo. Chan Chan, constructed primarily in the 9th century CE and serving as the capital of the Chimu Kingdom, covers approximately 20 square kilometers and features a series of walled royal compounds decorated with elaborate adobe reliefs depicting fish, birds, and geometric patterns. The sheer scale and sophistication of Chan Chan make it one of the most impressive archaeological sites in the world.
The colonial city of Trujillo was founded by Diego de Almagro in 1534 and retains a beautiful historic center with colorful colonial mansions, baroque churches, and elegant plazas. The Plaza de Armas is one of the finest in Peru, surrounded by the Cathedral of Trujillo, the Archbishop's Palace, and elegant mansions. The Casa de Urquiaga and Casa de la Emancipación are particularly notable historical mansions that are open to the public.
Trujillo is the undisputed capital of marinera, Peru's national dance. The National Marinera Contest held in Trujillo each January is the world's largest competition of this graceful and sensual coastal dance, attracting competitors and spectators from across Peru and beyond. The city's cultural pride in marinera is expressed in dance schools, performances, and public life throughout the year.
Trujillo is connected to Lima by the Pan-American Highway and by air via Capitán FAP Carlos Martínez de Pinillos International Airport. The city's extraordinary combination of Moche and Chimu archaeological heritage, colonial architecture, vibrant cultural traditions, and pleasant climate make it one of Peru's most compelling destinations.
