Tsuen Wan

Tsuen Wan is a town and district in the New Territories of Hong Kong, lying on the northern shore of Rambler Channel at the western end of the harbour, about ten kilometres from the centre of Kowloon. It is squeezed between the sea and the steep green slopes of Tai Mo Shan, the highest mountain in Hong Kong, and much of the flat land on which it stands was reclaimed from the water during the twentieth century.

Around three hundred thousand people live in the district. Tsuen Wan's importance rests on its role as the first of Hong Kong's new towns, the programme of planned satellite settlements that reshaped the territory after the Second World War. It remains a major residential and commercial centre, with container terminal facilities nearby at Kwai Chung and a busy retail core serving the western New Territories.

The area was settled long before the modern city, and Hakka villagers farmed and fished here for centuries. Its name means shallow bay. The population grew rapidly after 1945, when refugees arriving from the mainland brought both labour and capital, and Shanghai industrialists established the cotton mills that made Tsuen Wan the centre of Hong Kong's textile industry. The government designated it a new town in the 1950s, building large public housing estates, roads and, eventually, the underground railway. As manufacturing moved across the border in the 1980s and 1990s, the factories gave way to apartment towers, offices and shopping centres.

Despite the density, the district holds several notable sights. The Sam Tung Uk Museum preserves a walled Hakka village founded in the eighteenth century, with its ancestral hall, courtyards and farming implements, set incongruously among tower blocks. The Yuen Yuen Institute is a large temple complex dedicated to Taoism, Buddhism and Confucianism together, with a round main hall modelled on the Temple of Heaven in Beijing, and the Chuk Lam Sim Monastery nearby holds three enormous golden Buddha statues. Above the town, the country parks of Tai Mo Shan and Shing Mun offer some of the best hiking in Hong Kong, with the MacLehose Trail passing through forested reservoirs where macaques are common.

Daily life is thoroughly urban. Street markets, cha chaan teng cafés, dai pai dong food stalls and large malls sit side by side, and festivals such as Lunar New Year, the Tin Hau festival at the coastal temples and the Mid-Autumn lantern displays fill the calendar. The district has a strong Hakka heritage alongside communities from every part of China.

Transport is excellent. Tsuen Wan is the terminus of the MTR line that bears its name, and Tsuen Wan West station lies on the Tuen Ma line, giving fast journeys across the territory. The Tsing Ma Bridge and the airport expressway pass close by, putting Hong Kong International Airport within twenty minutes.

Education includes secondary schools of long standing, vocational training institutes and campuses of tertiary institutions.

Tsuen Wan is significant as the prototype of the Hong Kong new town, where Hakka village halls, monasteries and mountain trails survive at the edge of a dense modern city.
