Tumkūr, officially spelled Tumakuru, stands on the Deccan plateau in the southern Indian state of Karnataka, about seventy kilometres northwest of Bengaluru. The surrounding landscape is a dry, sunlit plain broken by granite hills and boulder outcrops, with coconut and areca palms lining the fields. At an altitude of roughly eight hundred metres, the city enjoys a moderate climate with warm days, cool nights and a monsoon that arrives from June onward.

Around four hundred thousand people live in the city, which serves as the headquarters of a large district and as an important market town for the surrounding countryside. Tumkūr is often called the coconut capital of Karnataka, and its economy rests on agriculture, food processing, engineering workshops and a growing number of industrial estates. Its position on the national highway and rail line to Bengaluru has made it a natural extension of that metropolis, and the region now forms part of an ambitious industrial corridor linking Bengaluru with Chennai and Mumbai.

The area has been settled for many centuries, passing through the hands of the Western Gangas, the Hoysalas and the Vijayanagara empire before falling under the rulers of Mysore. Nearby Sira was once a provincial capital under Mughal administration, and traces of that period remain in scattered tombs and mosques. Under the Wodeyar dynasty and later British influence, Tumkūr grew as an administrative and educational centre, a role it has never lost.

The most famous institution in the city is the Siddaganga Mutt, a monastery that has for generations provided free food, shelter and schooling to thousands of children from every background and community. Its long serving head, revered across Karnataka and known affectionately as the walking god, lived to the age of one hundred and eleven and made the mutt a symbol of social service. Pilgrims and visitors also travel to Devarayanadurga, a forested hill about twenty kilometres away crowned by two temples dedicated to Narasimha, where a natural spring called Namada Chilume is said never to run dry. Further north rises the great monolith of Madhugiri, one of the largest single rock formations in Asia, with a ruined fort clinging to its slopes.

Cultural life follows the rhythm of temple festivals, Kannada literary gatherings and classical music performances. Tumkur University and a cluster of engineering, medical and teacher training colleges give the city a young population and a steady student presence. Local markets are known for coconuts, jaggery, groundnuts and silk, and the surrounding district hosts one of the largest solar parks in the world at Pavagada, spread across land once considered too arid to farm.

Buses connect Tumkūr to every corner of Karnataka, trains run frequently to Bengaluru, and a six lane highway has cut the journey to under two hours. Autorickshaws and local buses handle movement within the city.
