Tungi
Tungi, also spelled Tongi, is an industrial town and municipality located in Gazipur District, just north of Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. Situated along the banks of the Turag River, Tungi is part of the greater Dhaka urban agglomeration and functions as one of the most strategically important industrial hubs in the country. The municipality's population is estimated at over 300,000 people, with the broader urbanized area being even more densely inhabited.
Tungi is internationally recognized for hosting the Bishwa Ijtema — one of the largest Islamic religious gatherings anywhere in the world. Held annually on the wide, flat banks of the Turag River, this three-day congregation draws millions of Muslims from Bangladesh and from countries across the globe, making it the second-largest gathering of Muslims after the Hajj pilgrimage in Mecca. The event, organized by the Tablighi Jamaat movement, temporarily transforms Tungi into a city of faith, with vast tent cities, communal prayers, and religious discussions attended by participants from every corner of the world.
Industrially, Tungi is home to numerous factories and manufacturing facilities, particularly in the garment, textile, jute processing, and engineering sectors. The Tongi Industrial Area is one of the designated industrial zones within the Dhaka metropolitan region, housing hundreds of factories that contribute significantly to Bangladesh's export-oriented economy. Biman Bangladesh Airlines' main technical center and aircraft engineering facility are also located in Tungi, situated near Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport and adding a specialized dimension to the city's industrial profile.
Culturally, Tungi's residents embody the predominantly Muslim Bengali culture of Bangladesh. The Turag River, though under environmental stress from industrial and urban pressures, remains an important feature of the local landscape and identity. Local markets and bazaars supply the daily needs of the large industrial workforce and their families, maintaining a sense of community amid the rapid pace of urban and industrial growth.
Transportation in Tungi is facilitated by its position on the main highway connecting Dhaka to Mymensingh and by the Dhaka–Mymensingh Railway line. Commuter trains and frequent bus services link Tungi to central Dhaka, making daily commuting feasible for the thousands of workers and officials who travel between the two cities.
Educationally, Tungi has several schools and colleges serving the local community. Many residents seeking higher education travel to Dhaka, where Bangladesh's leading universities and professional institutions are concentrated.
Tungi's remarkable dual identity — as a major industrial powerhouse driving Bangladesh's manufacturing economy and as one of the world's great centers of Islamic devotion — makes it a uniquely compelling city. Whether viewed through the lens of economic development, religious significance, or urban growth, Tungi plays a vital and distinctive role in the story of modern Bangladesh.
