Tuxtla

Tuxtla Gutiérrez, commonly referred to simply as Tuxtla, is the capital and largest city of the state of Chiapas in the southernmost region of Mexico. Located in the Central Depression of Chiapas along the Sabinal River, the city is surrounded by mountains and lies at an elevation of approximately 530 meters above sea level, resulting in a warm and somewhat humid climate. With a population exceeding 600,000 people in the city and over one million in the metropolitan area, Tuxtla Gutiérrez is the most populous city in Chiapas and the primary center of administration, commerce, and services for the entire state.

The original settlement was a Zoque indigenous town known as Coyatoc or Tuchtlan, from which the name Tuxtla is derived. The Spanish colonial presence was established in the region during the 16th century, and the area gradually developed as an administrative and agricultural center within the colonial framework. The city received the surname "Gutiérrez" in 1848 in honor of Joaquín Miguel Gutiérrez, a local hero who fought for the incorporation of Chiapas into the Mexican nation. Despite being the state capital, Tuxtla has long played second fiddle in fame to the colonial gem of San Cristóbal de las Casas and to the Maya archaeological sites of the state, but in recent decades it has grown rapidly into a modern urban center.

One of the most spectacular natural attractions in Chiapas and indeed in all of Mexico is the Cañón del Sumidero, located just 10 kilometers north of Tuxtla. This dramatic canyon, carved by the Grijalva River to depths of up to 1,000 meters, can be explored by boat tour or observed from viewpoints along the rim. Its vertical walls are home to waterfalls, cave systems, and diverse wildlife. The Sumidero Canyon National Park is one of Mexico's most visited natural attractions and a source of great regional pride.

The Zoológico Miguel Álvarez del Toro (ZooMAT), located within the city, is widely regarded as one of the finest zoos in Latin America and is dedicated exclusively to the wildlife of Chiapas. It is home to jaguars, tapirs, harpy eagles, quetzals, and many other remarkable species native to the region's diverse ecosystems, from tropical forests to highland pine forests. The zoo plays an important role in conservation education and breeding programs for endangered species.

Tuxtla's economy is based primarily on commerce, government services, and an emerging tourism sector. The city serves as the commercial hub for the agricultural production of the Chiapas lowlands, including coffee, cacao, corn, and tropical fruits. Ángel Albino Corzo International Airport connects Tuxtla to Mexico City and other domestic destinations, facilitating business travel and tourism.

The Autonomous University of Chiapas has its main campus in Tuxtla and provides higher education to thousands of students from across the state. The city's cultural institutions include the Regional Anthropology Museum, which presents the rich indigenous heritage of Chiapas, and various theaters and cultural centers that host concerts, performances, and festivals throughout the year.

Tuxtla Gutiérrez is a city of considerable natural splendor and growing urban sophistication, serving as the modern gateway to one of Mexico's most culturally and ecologically rich states. Its dramatic canyon, remarkable zoo, and role as the beating administrative heart of Chiapas make it an essential stop for anyone exploring the wonders of southern Mexico.
