Ubeda is a historic city located in the province of Jaen in the autonomous community of Andalusia, southern Spain. With a population of approximately 34,000 inhabitants, Ubeda is one of the most magnificent examples of Renaissance urban planning and architecture in the entire Iberian Peninsula. Together with the nearby city of Baeza, it was jointly inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List in 2003 as the Renaissance Monumental Ensembles of Ubeda and Baeza, placing these two Andalusian towns among the most significant Renaissance heritage sites in Europe.

Ubeda's golden age came in the 16th century, when two powerful court figures, Francisco de los Cobos y Molina (secretary of state to Emperor Charles V) and his nephew Juan Vazquez de Molina (who held the same position under Philip II), channeled royal patronage into the transformation of their hometown into a showcase of Italian Renaissance architecture. The result is a remarkable concentration of palaces, churches, and civic buildings designed by the greatest architects of the Spanish Renaissance, most notably Andres de Vandelvira, whose work defines the character and quality of the city's historic quarter.

The Plaza Vazquez de Molina is widely considered the finest Renaissance square in Spain and one of the most beautiful public spaces in all of Europe. Surrounded on all sides by outstanding Renaissance buildings, the square's harmony and architectural quality are extraordinary. The centerpiece is the Sacra Capilla del Salvador del Mundo, a private funerary chapel commissioned by Francisco de los Cobos and designed by Diego de Siloe and Andres de Vandelvira as the most lavish private chapel of its era. Its extravagant Plateresque facade and richly decorated interior represent the apogee of Spanish Renaissance religious architecture.

Other buildings facing the Plaza Vazquez de Molina include the Palace of the Marquis of Mancera, the Palace of the Chains (now the town hall), the Basilica of Santa Maria de los Reales Alcazares built on the site of a former mosque, and the Parador Nacional de Ubeda, a luxury state hotel housed in the 16th-century Palace of the Dean Ortega. Beyond the square, the historic quarter contains numerous other palaces, convents, churches, and Renaissance fountains that reward extended exploration.

Ubeda has an important tradition of pottery making, particularly the production of distinctive green-glazed ceramics using techniques introduced by Moorish craftsmen. The Pottery Quarter (Barrio Alfarero) in the lower part of the historic center contains workshops and galleries where artisans continue to work using traditional methods, producing items from decorative tiles to sculptural vessels. The city's ceramics have become internationally recognized as authentic expressions of Andalusian craft heritage.

The surrounding province of Jaen produces more olive oil than any other area in the world, and the landscape of gently rolling hills covered in silver-green olive trees is one of the most distinctive and beautiful in Spain. Agritourism experiences centered on olive oil production, tasting, and gastronomy are a growing attraction. Ubeda's unique combination of Renaissance magnificence, living craft traditions, and exceptional natural setting makes it one of the most rewarding discoveries in Andalusia.
