Uíge
Uíge is a city in northern Angola and the capital of the province of the same name. It lies on a plateau at an altitude of around eight hundred metres, in a region of rolling hills, dense tropical forest and deep river valleys not far from the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Rainfall is high and the vegetation is lush, which makes the province one of the most fertile parts of the country.
The population is estimated at around three hundred and twenty thousand. The city is the commercial and administrative heart of a province whose wealth has always come from the land. Uíge stands at the centre of Angola's coffee belt, and before independence this region produced a large share of the robusta coffee that made Angola one of the world's leading exporters. Cassava, bananas, palm oil and timber are also important, and the province holds mineral deposits including copper and iron.
The area belonged historically to the sphere of the Kingdom of Kongo, one of the most powerful states of central Africa, whose old capital at Mbanza Kongo lies to the north-west. Portuguese settlement came late, and the town was developed in the twentieth century as a colonial centre named Carmona, laid out with broad avenues and administrative buildings to serve the coffee plantations. The war of independence began in this region in 1961 with an uprising in the northern coffee estates, and the long civil war that followed hit the province particularly hard, emptying farms and damaging the city. Reconstruction since 2002 has been steady but incomplete.
Uíge is not a monumental city, and its appeal lies in the surrounding country. The Kalandula and Mucoso areas offer forest and waterfalls, and the Uíge highlands are known for birdlife and for stands of remaining Congolese rainforest that make the province one of the most biodiverse in Angola. In the town itself, the cathedral, the provincial government buildings and the busy central market are the main points of reference, and the old coffee warehouses recall the plantation economy.
The dominant culture is Bakongo, and the Kikongo language is widely spoken alongside Portuguese. Music, particularly the semba and kizomba styles that developed in Angola and spread across the Portuguese-speaking world, is central to social life, and church congregations, both Catholic and Protestant, play a strong community role. Local food is based on funge made from cassava flour, palm oil stews, freshwater fish and the fruit that grows abundantly in the region.
Transport has improved with the rebuilding of the road from Luanda, which is about three hundred kilometres to the south-west, and Uíge Airport provides domestic flights to the capital. Roads within the province remain difficult in the rainy season.
Higher education is provided by Kimpa Vita University, named after the eighteenth-century Kongo prophetess, which serves the northern provinces and has helped retain young people in the region.
Uíge is important as the centre of Angolan coffee country and as a province rebuilding after decades of conflict, set in some of the greenest and least-known landscape in southern Africa.
