Uijeongbu-si

Uijeongbu-si is a city located in Gyeonggi Province, just north of Seoul in South Korea. Positioned approximately 17 kilometers from the capital, it serves as one of the major satellite cities in the Seoul Metropolitan Area. With a population of around 450,000 residents, Uijeongbu functions both as a self-contained urban center and as a commuter city for those working in Seoul. Its name, which means "State Council Office" in Korean, reflects its historical importance as an administrative outpost during the Joseon Dynasty.

The city's history is closely tied to the turbulent twentieth century. During the Korean War, the area saw significant military activity, and after the armistice, Uijeongbu hosted large American military installations as part of the United Nations Command presence in South Korea. Camp Red Cloud and Camp Stanley were prominent US Army bases that shaped the local economy and culture for decades. The eventual relocation of these bases in the early 2000s opened up significant land for urban redevelopment and transformation.

Uijeongbu is perhaps best known internationally through its association with the television series M*A*S*H, the famous American show set during the Korean War. The fictional 4077th M*A*S*H unit was based in a location inspired by the real military presence near Uijeongbu, and the city has embraced this connection as a point of cultural interest for visitors from abroad. A small museum and themed attractions keep the memory of this cultural link alive.

One of the city's most beloved local traditions is the Budaejjigae — or "army stew" — a spicy Korean-American fusion dish that originated in Uijeongbu during the post-war era when surplus US military food was incorporated into Korean cooking. The dish, made with spam, sausages, kimchi, noodles, and various vegetables, has become a nationwide favorite, but Uijeongbu's restaurants are considered the original and most authentic purveyors. The city even hosts an annual Budaejjigae festival celebrating this culinary heritage.

The city is well connected to Seoul via the Gyeongwon Line and other rail services, making daily commuting straightforward for its residents. Modern shopping centers, parks, and cultural facilities have transformed Uijeongbu into a comfortable and vibrant place to live. Bukhansan National Park, with its dramatic granite peaks, is easily accessible from the city and provides excellent hiking opportunities for residents and visitors alike.

Uijeongbu has grown into a balanced city that honors its historical legacy while embracing modern urban development. Its unique position at the intersection of Korean tradition, wartime history, and contemporary metropolitan culture makes it a distinctive stop for anyone exploring the greater Seoul region.
