Ulsan

Ulsan is a major metropolitan city located on the southeastern coast of South Korea, facing the Korean Strait. With a population of approximately 1.1 million, Ulsan was elevated to the status of a metropolitan city directly under central government jurisdiction in 1997. The city is widely recognized as South Korea's industrial capital, home to some of the world's largest manufacturing facilities in shipbuilding, automotive production, and petrochemical processing, and representing a remarkable story of transformation from a small fishing town into a global industrial powerhouse within just a few decades.

Ulsan's modern history as an industrial center began in earnest during the 1960s when the Korean government, implementing its first Five-Year Economic Development Plan, designated the area as an industrial complex. What followed was one of the most rapid and dramatic industrial transformations in modern history. The Hyundai Group established its first automobile assembly plant here in 1968, and the Hyundai Motor Company's Ulsan complex has grown into the world's single largest automobile manufacturing plant, capable of producing over 1.5 million vehicles per year. Samsung Heavy Industries, Hyundai Heavy Industries, and other major conglomerates have built enormous shipbuilding yards along the coast, making Ulsan's port one of the most important in Asia.

The SK Innovation petrochemical complex is one of the largest in Asia, processing crude oil and producing the raw materials for plastics and chemical products. The concentration of these industries has made Ulsan one of the highest per-capita income cities in South Korea, though it has also brought environmental challenges that the city has worked hard to address through ecological restoration and urban greening initiatives.

Despite its industrial character, Ulsan has significant natural and cultural attractions. Taehwagang Grand Park, developed along the Taehwa River that flows through the city, is a spectacular urban parkland with vast fields of reeds, walking paths, and seasonal wildflower displays. The Grand Park's bamboo forest and riverside paths attract millions of visitors each year. The nearby Ganjeolgot Cape is the easternmost point of the Korean mainland and is a popular destination for sunrise viewing, particularly during the new year period when thousands gather to welcome the first sunrise of the year.

Ulsan is also home to the Bangudae Petroglyphs, a UNESCO-designated rock art site containing thousands of prehistoric carvings depicting whales, deer, tigers, and hunting scenes that date back approximately 7,000 years — one of the most important prehistoric art sites in East Asia. The Ulsan Museum and the Ulsan National Museum provide cultural context for the region's history from ancient times to the present.

With excellent highway and rail connections to Busan and the rest of Korea, and continued investment in cultural and environmental amenities to balance its industrial heritage, Ulsan represents South Korea's economic ambition and industrial prowess in one of the country's most dynamic cities.
