Üsküdar

Uskudar is a district and municipality located on the Asian side of Istanbul, Turkey, on the eastern shore of the Bosphorus strait. With a population of approximately 530,000, Uskudar is one of Istanbul's most historically significant and densely populated districts, offering a perspective on the great city that differs markedly from the more touristically developed European shore. Situated directly across the Bosphorus from the historic peninsula of old Istanbul, Uskudar provides sweeping views of the iconic skyline and has its own rich heritage of Ottoman architecture, spiritual sites, and traditional neighborhoods.

The settlement of Uskudar, known in antiquity as Chrysopolis, is one of the oldest inhabited areas on the Bosphorus, predating even the founding of Greek Byzantium on the opposite shore. Chrysopolis served as an important staging point for military campaigns and commercial activities throughout antiquity. During the Byzantine period, it remained an important suburban district. After the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople in 1453, Uskudar developed into a prosperous district famous for its mosques, hans, and the elegant waterfront mansions known as yalis that lined its shores.

The architectural heritage of Uskudar is dominated by a remarkable collection of Ottoman mosque complexes. The Mihrimah Sultan Mosque, designed by the great architect Sinan in the 16th century for Suleiman the Magnificent's daughter, is one of the masterpieces of classical Ottoman architecture, its soaring dome and delicate minarets visible from across the Bosphorus. The Yeni Valide Mosque, the Semsi Pasha Mosque, and numerous smaller neighborhood mosques collectively make Uskudar one of the richest concentrations of classical Islamic architecture in the world. These mosques continue to serve their original spiritual function as active places of worship for the district's predominantly Muslim community.

The Maiden's Tower, known in Turkish as Kiz Kulesi, stands on a tiny islet in the Bosphorus just off the Uskudar shore and is one of Istanbul's most beloved landmarks. Steeped in legend and myth, the tower has served various functions over the centuries as a lighthouse, customs point, quarantine station, and coast guard observation post. It now houses a restaurant and cafe that offers extraordinary views of both the Asian and European shores of Istanbul, accessible by short boat journeys from the Uskudar waterfront.

Uskudar is also associated with Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing, who organized nursing care for British soldiers wounded in the Crimean War at the Selimiye Barracks in the district. A museum within the barracks now commemorates her work and legacy, drawing visitors interested in medical history and the humanitarian ideals she championed. Camlica Hill, the highest point on the Asian side of Istanbul, lies within Uskudar and offers panoramic views of the entire city, the Bosphorus, and on clear days the Sea of Marmara and the Princes Islands.

Uskudar's combination of classical Ottoman heritage, spiritual significance, legendary landmarks, and authentic neighborhood character makes it one of the most rewarding districts of Istanbul for visitors who venture beyond the European historic center. Its busy ferry terminal, traditional markets, and lively community life offer an authentic encounter with the Asian soul of one of the world's greatest cities.
