Vaughan lies in southern Ontario, immediately north of Toronto, within the regional municipality of York. The land rises gently from the shore of Lake Ontario toward the wooded ridges of the Oak Ridges Moraine, and the Humber and Don river valleys cut green corridors through the built up areas. Winters bring snow and hard frost, while summers are warm and humid, softened by the ravines and conservation lands that thread across the city.

With well over three hundred thousand residents, Vaughan is one of the fastest growing municipalities in Canada, having expanded from a rural township into a major city within a single generation. It was incorporated as a city in 1991 and now forms an integral part of the Greater Toronto Area, contributing significantly to the region's manufacturing, logistics, retail and film production sectors.

The area was settled in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries by farmers of German, French and British origin, and it takes its name from a British diplomat of that era. For most of its history it was a landscape of farms and mills served by small villages, several of which still form the heart of the modern city. Woodbridge, Maple, Thornhill, Concord and Kleinburg each retain a distinct identity, with historic main streets, churches and houses surviving among newer subdivisions. Rapid suburban growth arrived in the 1980s and has continued ever since, drawing large Italian, Jewish, Russian and South Asian communities and giving Vaughan one of the most distinctive cultural profiles in the region.

Its best known attraction is Canada's Wonderland, the largest amusement park in the country, famous for an extraordinary collection of roller coasters and for the artificial mountain at its centre. Vaughan Mills is one of the busiest shopping destinations in Ontario. For a quieter experience, the McMichael Canadian Art Collection in the village of Kleinburg displays an outstanding gathering of works by the Group of Seven and by Indigenous artists, set in a timber and stone gallery surrounded by forest. Nearby are Boyd Conservation Area, the Kortright Centre with its trails and sugar bush, and a network of paths along the Humber River.

Community life revolves around festivals, sports leagues and a celebrated food culture, with Woodbridge in particular known across the region for Italian bakeries, cafes and restaurants. Concert halls, libraries and a growing arts scene serve residents, and film and television studios in the industrial districts have made the city a familiar backdrop on screen.

Transport is a major strength. In 2017 the Toronto subway was extended to the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre, the first time the system crossed the city boundary, and around that station a dense new downtown of towers and offices is rising. Regional trains, buses, a bus rapid transit line and the major highways that meet here place Vaughan at the centre of Ontario's transport network, close to the country's largest airport.
