Villahermosa

Villahermosa is the capital and largest city of the state of Tabasco in southeastern Mexico, located in the tropical lowlands near the confluence of the Grijalva and Carrizal rivers. The city sits at nearly sea level in one of Mexico's most water-rich regions, surrounded by rivers, lakes, and wetlands that define both the landscape and the cultural identity of this distinctive corner of the country. Its name, meaning "Beautiful Town" in Spanish, reflects the lush tropical setting that has always characterized the area.

With a metropolitan population of approximately 800,000 people, Villahermosa is one of the major cities of southeastern Mexico and serves as the political, economic, and cultural hub of Tabasco. The state's economy has been profoundly shaped by the petroleum industry, and Villahermosa has grown substantially since oil exploration began in the surrounding region in the mid-twentieth century. The presence of PEMEX, Mexico's national oil company, has made the city one of the most economically prosperous in the southeast.

The region around Villahermosa was home to the Olmec civilization, one of the earliest and most influential cultures in Mesoamerican history. The Olmecs, who flourished between approximately 1500 BCE and 400 BCE, created colossal stone heads and elaborate ceremonial centers in the tropical lowlands of Tabasco and Veracruz. This extraordinary pre-Columbian legacy is the foundation of one of Mexico's most important museums, located in the city.

The Parque-Museo La Venta is one of Villahermosa's most celebrated attractions and a truly unique institution. The outdoor museum houses Olmec artifacts — including massive basalt heads, altars, and stelae — transplanted from the ancient site of La Venta and displayed within a natural jungle setting along a winding park path. Walking among these monumental sculptures in a tropical forest environment creates an unforgettable encounter with Mexico's ancient civilizations. The adjacent zoo features Tabasco's native wildlife alongside the archaeological display.

The city's cultural scene extends to the Carlos Pellicer Regional Museum of Anthropology, which houses a superb collection of Maya, Olmec, and other pre-Columbian artifacts. Carlos Pellicer Cámara, one of Mexico's greatest poets of the twentieth century, was a native of Tabasco, and the museum bears his name in honor of his role in preserving regional heritage. The historic downtown area along the Grijalva River has been revitalized with a scenic waterfront promenade known as the Paseo Tabasco.

Tabasco's cuisine is distinct and celebrated within Mexico. Villahermosa's restaurants and markets offer dishes featuring pejelagarto, a prehistoric-looking freshwater fish that is a regional delicacy, as well as tamales, cacao-based beverages, and tropical fruits. Tabasco is the birthplace of the habanero pepper and has a rich culinary tradition tied to its rivers, wetlands, and agricultural abundance.

Villahermosa is served by the Carlos Rovirosa Pérez International Airport, with flights to Mexico City and other major Mexican cities. Road and bus connections link the city to the Yucatán Peninsula, Chiapas, and the rest of Mexico.

Villahermosa is a city where ancient Olmec grandeur, petroleum prosperity, and tropical natural beauty converge. Its exceptional archaeological heritage, vibrant cultural scene, and unique riverside setting make it an essential stop for those exploring the rich and often underappreciated treasures of southeastern Mexico.
