Visby
Visby is a medieval walled city and the main settlement on the island of Gotland, Sweden's largest island, located in the Baltic Sea off the eastern coast of the Swedish mainland. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995, Visby is one of the best-preserved medieval city centers in Northern Europe, containing a remarkable ensemble of 13th and 14th-century buildings, a complete circuit of city walls with 44 towers, and more than a dozen ruined medieval churches that give the city a hauntingly beautiful atmosphere unlike any other in Scandinavia.
Visby has a permanent population of approximately 24,000, which expands dramatically in summer when tourists flock to the island by ferry and plane from Stockholm and other Swedish cities. As the commercial and cultural center of Gotland, Visby combines its medieval heritage with a lively contemporary character — art galleries, boutique hotels, craft breweries, and a growing food scene have developed around the historic core in recent decades.
Visby rose to prominence in the 12th and 13th centuries as a major trading hub in the Hanseatic League, the great medieval commercial network that dominated Baltic trade. The city's German merchants grew immensely wealthy, and their prosperity is reflected in the scale and quality of the buildings they erected — including the Cathedral of Saint Mary (Visby Domkyrka), begun around 1190 and one of the best-preserved medieval cathedrals in Sweden, and numerous merchant houses along the ring street Strandgatan that still stand in various states of preservation. The 3.6-kilometer city wall, built primarily in the 13th and 14th centuries, is among the most complete surviving medieval city walls in Europe, with 44 of its original 54 towers still standing.
The ruins of eleven medieval churches within the city walls are among Visby's most atmospheric features, particularly the Church of Saint Catherine, whose Gothic lancet windows and roofless nave are silhouetted against the sky in one of the most evocative medieval ruins in Scandinavia. Visby Medieval Week (Medeltidsveckan), held each August, is one of the largest medieval festivals in the world, with thousands of participants in period costume filling the city streets for jousting, markets, concerts, and theatrical performances.
Gotland Island has a remarkable archaeological heritage extending from the Bronze Age through the Viking era. The island has produced more Viking gold and silver hoards than any other place on Earth, many of which are displayed in the Gotland Museum (Gotlands Museum) in Visby. The island's landscape — limestone plains, ancient churches, and sea cliffs known as raukar — offers excellent cycling through flat countryside dotted with medieval round churches unique to Gotland.
Visby is connected to the Swedish mainland by ferry from Nynäshamn (south of Stockholm, about three hours) and Oskarshamn, and by domestic flights from Stockholm Arlanda and other Swedish airports. The island has no rail service; cycling and buses are the primary means of getting around.
Visby is a city of extraordinary medieval integrity and romantic atmosphere, offering one of Europe's most complete encounters with the urban world of the Middle Ages in a beautiful island setting.
