Vitoria da Conquista stands on a high plateau in the south-west of the state of Bahia in north-eastern Brazil, roughly five hundred kilometres from the state capital Salvador. At around nine hundred metres above sea level it enjoys a climate noticeably cooler and drier than the coast, with fresh nights and a reputation as one of the most comfortable cities in the region. The surrounding landscape marks a transition between the dry caatinga scrub of the interior, patches of Atlantic forest on the wetter slopes and open highland pasture.

With around three hundred and forty thousand inhabitants it is the third largest city in Bahia and the undisputed centre of a vast hinterland covering dozens of municipalities. Coffee grown on the plateau made its modern fortune, and the district became one of the most productive arabica regions in Brazil, alongside cattle ranching, dairy farming and horticulture. Today the economy is dominated by commerce, health care, education and services, with hospitals and specialist clinics drawing patients from across southern Bahia and northern Minas Gerais, and shopping centres and wholesale trade serving a regional population of more than two million.

The city traces its origin to the late eighteenth century and the expeditions led by Joao Goncalves da Costa, who pushed into the interior on behalf of the Portuguese crown and fought the indigenous Mongoyo and Pataxo peoples who lived there. The settlement that grew from those campaigns was long called Conquista, and the name it carries today, meaning victory of the conquest, records that violent history. It became a municipality in 1840 and grew slowly until the middle of the twentieth century, when the opening of the Rio to Bahia highway, which passes directly through the city, transformed it into a road junction and commercial hub, triggering rapid expansion.

Local landmarks include the cathedral and the Praca Tancredo Neves, the tree-lined Avenida Olivia Flores, and the Lagoa das Bateias, a lake with walking paths on the edge of the centre. The Poco Escuro ecological reserve protects a pocket of forest and springs within the urban area, and the Serra do Periperi park offers trails and views over the plateau. The Casa Museu Regis Pacheco and the municipal cultural centre house local history and art, while the annual agricultural show, the June festivals of Sao Joao with forro music and bonfires, and a strong tradition of popular music fill the calendar. The film director Glauber Rocha, a central figure of Brazilian cinema, was born in the city, and the modern airport carries his name.

Education is a particular strength. The State University of the Southwest of Bahia has its main campus here, joined by federal institutes and several private universities, giving the city tens of thousands of students. Highways radiate in all directions and the airport offers flights to Salvador, Sao Paulo and other centres.

Vitoria da Conquista is important as the economic, medical and educational capital of the Bahian interior and as a highland city with a distinctive character of its own.
