Vologda

Vologda lies in the north of European Russia, about four hundred and fifty kilometres from Moscow, on the quiet river of the same name in a landscape of forest, meadow and marsh. It is the administrative capital of Vologda Oblast, a vast and thinly populated region often described as the heart of the Russian North. The city is low-built and green, and its riverbanks are lined with wooden houses whose carved window frames and porches are famous throughout Russia.

Around three hundred thousand people live here. Vologda's importance is partly administrative and partly cultural, since it preserves an exceptional concentration of northern Russian architecture, and partly economic, resting on timber, dairy products, machinery and its position as a major railway junction on the routes to Arkhangelsk and the Arctic ports.

Tradition dates the city's founding to 1147, the same year as Moscow. It began as a trading outpost of Novgorod on the water routes leading north, and passed later to Moscow. Its most remarkable moment came under Ivan the Terrible, who took an intense interest in the town in the 1560s and apparently intended to make it a northern capital. He ordered the construction of a stone kremlin and of the Cathedral of Saint Sophia, but abandoned the project abruptly and never returned. Vologda later prospered on trade with English and Dutch merchants who reached Russia through the White Sea, then declined when Saint Petersburg took over Baltic commerce, and revived with the arrival of the railway in the nineteenth century.

The Cathedral of Saint Sophia, austere and white with five silver domes, remains the finest building, and its interior is covered with seventeenth-century frescoes. The adjoining bishop's courtyard houses the state museum, and a bell tower gives a wide view over the rooftops. The Spaso-Prilutsky Monastery on the edge of town, founded in the fourteenth century, is a walled ensemble of churches and towers beside the river. Entire streets of nineteenth-century wooden mansions survive, and the wooden architecture museum at Semyonkovo gathers relocated peasant buildings.

Vologda is famous for two products. Vologda lace, made by bobbin technique in intricate white patterns, has been produced here for two centuries and has its own dedicated museum, one of the largest lace collections in the world. Vologda butter, created in the nineteenth century by Nikolai Vereshchagin using a distinctive nutty-tasting process, remains a protected regional speciality. The region beyond the city holds the great monasteries of Kirillo-Belozersk and Ferapontov, the latter containing frescoes by Dionisy that are inscribed on the World Heritage list.

Trains connect Vologda to Moscow, Saint Petersburg and Arkhangelsk, and roads and a small airport supplement them. Vologda State University and the dairy academy named after Vereshchagin educate students from across the north.

Vologda offers medieval churches, carved wooden houses, fine handicrafts and the calm atmosphere of the Russian North, and it is one of the most rewarding provincial cities in the country.
