Volzhsky
Volzhsky is a city in Volgograd Oblast in southern Russia, standing on the left bank of the Volga a short distance upstream from Volgograd itself. It lies at the head of the Volga-Akhtuba floodplain, a long green belt of channels, lakes and willow woods that runs south towards the Caspian, and it is separated from its larger neighbour by the river and by the enormous dam that gave the city its reason to exist.
About three hundred and twenty thousand people live here, making Volzhsky the second largest city in the region. It is an industrial centre of national importance, producing steel pipes, synthetic rubber, tyres, abrasives, chemicals and bearings, and it remains closely tied to the hydroelectric station that anchors its economy.
The city is almost entirely a creation of the twentieth century. A village called Bezrodnoye stood on the site, but in 1950 work began on the Stalingrad, later Volga, Hydroelectric Station, at the time the largest power station in Europe. A settlement was built for the workers, and in 1954 it received city status under the name Volzhsky. Unusually, it was designed as a complete planned city by architects working with an unusually generous budget, with broad tree-lined avenues, low apartment blocks set among gardens, and a deliberate emphasis on greenery to soften the harsh steppe climate. The result is one of the most consistently planned Soviet-era cities in Russia and is often described as a garden city.
The dam itself is the principal landmark, more than three kilometres across, carrying road and rail traffic and generating power for the whole region. The central avenue of Lenin Street, the Palace of Culture Volgogradgidrostroy, the Bell Tower memorial and the long embankment park are the focus of civic life. Fountains, sculpture and rose beds are a point of local pride. Beyond the city, the Volga-Akhtuba floodplain is a paradise for fishing, birdwatching and boating, and the lotus fields that bloom in late summer draw visitors from across the region. Volgograd, with its immense Motherland Calls monument and its Stalingrad battlefield memorials, is half an hour away.
Cultural life includes drama and puppet theatres, a philharmonic orchestra, a local history museum and an art gallery, along with a strong tradition of amateur sport supported by the factories. Summers are extremely hot and dry, and life shifts to the riverside beaches and the shade of the floodplain forests.
Transport is provided by highways to Volgograd and beyond, by a railway freight and passenger link, by river traffic on the Volga, and by Volgograd International Airport, which is reasonably close. Buses and trolleybuses serve the city, whose grid layout makes navigation simple.
Higher education includes branches of Volgograd State Technical University and a polytechnic institute, mainly training engineers for the local industries.
Volzhsky is interesting as a rare example of a Soviet planned city that worked as intended, combining heavy industry with wide green streets, and as the base for exploring one of the finest river landscapes in European Russia.
