Wad Medani

Wad Medani is a city in east-central Sudan and the capital of Al Jazirah State. It stands on the west bank of the Blue Nile, about 135 kilometres south-east of Khartoum, in the heart of the triangle of land between the Blue and White Niles that gives the state its name, Al Jazirah meaning the island. The setting is flat and open, with palm groves and irrigated fields stretching away from the riverbank.

The city has a population of roughly three hundred and fifty thousand, which has fluctuated sharply in recent years, and it is one of the largest urban centres in Sudan. Its national importance rests above all on agriculture. Wad Medani is the administrative headquarters of the Gezira Scheme, one of the largest irrigation projects in the world, begun under British administration in the 1920s and covering close to a million hectares of cotton, sorghum, wheat and groundnuts. For much of the twentieth century the cotton grown here was the mainstay of the Sudanese economy.

The settlement is traditionally said to have been founded in the eighteenth century and named after a local holy man, and it grew as a river port and trading post during the Funj and Turco-Egyptian periods. The construction of the Sennar Dam and the canal network transformed it in the early twentieth century into a modern administrative town, laid out with tree-lined avenues, colonial-era offices and residential quarters for engineers and officials. That planned character still distinguishes central Wad Medani from most Sudanese cities.

Landmarks are modest but distinctive. The riverside corniche, shaded by mature trees, is the favourite place for an evening walk, and the old irrigation headquarters, the great mosque and the covered markets are the anchors of the centre. Traditional souks sell cloth, spices, dates and locally made crafts, while sugar and textile factories on the outskirts recall the industrial ambitions of the scheme.

Wad Medani has long enjoyed a reputation as a cultured and relatively relaxed city, known for poetry, music and a strong tradition of civic activism. Coffee sellers set up under the trees, wedding celebrations spill into the streets, and the city has produced many prominent Sudanese writers, singers and political figures.

The University of Gezira, founded in 1975, is one of the country's most respected institutions, particularly in medicine, agriculture and veterinary science, and it has given the city a large student population and a network of research centres. Roads link Wad Medani to Khartoum, Sennar and Port Sudan, and the highway to the capital is one of the busiest in the country, while river traffic and a railway line add further connections.

Wad Medani has been severely affected by the civil conflict that erupted in Sudan in 2023, first receiving large numbers of displaced people and later experiencing fighting and displacement of its own. Even so, it remains central to the country's food supply, education and identity, and its recovery is widely seen as essential to the future of Sudan as a whole.
