Wanzhou
Wanzhou is a district-level city and the largest urban center in the northeastern part of Chongqing Municipality, China. Located along the northern bank of the Yangtze River, Wanzhou serves as the regional center for northeastern Chongqing and has a population of approximately 1.5 million in its urban area. Its position along the Yangtze has historically made it an important river port and commercial hub connecting Chongqing with cities further downstream.
The area has a long history, formerly known as Wanxian, which was a well-established river town and trading post for centuries. Wanzhou was one of the first cities in the Yangtze River valley to be opened to foreign trade in the 19th century following China's treaty concessions. The construction of the Three Gorges Dam, located downstream near Yichang, had a profound impact on Wanzhou. The reservoir created by the dam submerged parts of the old city, and a massive resettlement program relocated over 100,000 residents from the old lower town to newly constructed areas on higher ground.
The Three Gorges reservoir has transformed the landscape around Wanzhou, creating a vast inland sea that has altered the city's relationship with the river. While the submergence of the old town represented a significant cultural and historical loss, the new Wanzhou features modern urban infrastructure, wide boulevards, and high-rise residential and commercial buildings perched above the reservoir. The Wanzhou Yangtze River Bridge, one of the major crossings in this section of the river, is a prominent feature of the cityscape.
The surrounding region offers scenic natural landscapes, including forested hills, dramatic Yangtze River gorge scenery, and tributaries such as the Modao River valley. The area around Wanzhou is known for producing a variety of agricultural products, and the local cuisine reflects the bold and spicy flavors typical of Sichuan and Chongqing cooking traditions.
Wanzhou has benefited from significant infrastructure investment, including the opening of the Wanzhou Wuqiao Airport, which provides air connections to Chongqing and other major Chinese cities. High-speed railway connections have also improved Wanzhou's connectivity to the broader national rail network. Several universities and colleges serve the educational needs of the northeastern Chongqing region.
Wanzhou's story — of historical river commerce, transformation by the Three Gorges Project, and ongoing modern development — makes it a compelling example of the dramatic changes that have reshaped the Yangtze River valley in the 21st century. It remains a vital regional center and a window onto the complexities of China's rapid urban transformation.
