Wolverhampton stands in the West Midlands of England, about twenty-five kilometres north-west of Birmingham, on a sandstone ridge at the edge of the industrial region known as the Black Country. The land falls away to the west towards the green Shropshire and Staffordshire countryside, and canals thread through the city, reminders of the network that once carried its goods across Britain. The climate is typically English, mild and changeable, with rain spread evenly through the year.

With a population of around two hundred and sixty thousand, Wolverhampton is one of the larger cities in the Midlands. Its economy today combines manufacturing, particularly aerospace and automotive engineering at the industrial park north of the city, with health care, education, retail and public services. It has long been a market centre for the surrounding towns and remains an important shopping and transport hub.

The settlement takes its name from Lady Wulfrun, a Saxon noblewoman who received a charter for land here in 985 and founded a church on the hilltop. In the Middle Ages it grew rich on wool, and a fine collegiate church was built with the profits. From the seventeenth century onwards the discovery of coal and iron nearby transformed it, and Wolverhampton became famous for locks and keys, japanned metalware, enamel, steel springs and tools. In the twentieth century it built motorcycles and cars under names such as Sunbeam and AJS, and it was granted city status in 2000 as part of the millennium celebrations.

The centre is dominated by St Peter's Collegiate Church, a red sandstone building of great age standing above the streets, with a carved Saxon pillar in its churchyard. The Wolverhampton Art Gallery holds an outstanding collection of Pop Art alongside Victorian paintings and a gallery devoted to the Northern Irish troubles, and the Grand Theatre presents drama, opera and pantomime in a splendid Victorian auditorium. Just outside the centre, Wightwick Manor is one of the finest surviving Arts and Crafts houses in Britain, filled with William Morris fabrics and Pre-Raphaelite paintings, while Bantock House and its park preserve a Georgian villa and collections of local japanned ware. West Park, an elegant Victorian public garden with a lake and conservatory, remains a favourite retreat.

Football is central to local identity, and Wolverhampton Wanderers, one of the founding clubs of the Football League, play at Molineux in the heart of the city. The population is notably diverse, with large Punjabi Sikh, Indian, Caribbean and more recent African and eastern European communities, and their temples, gurdwaras and churches, food and festivals shape daily life. The city has produced well-known musicians, from rock bands of the seventies to soul and bhangra artists.

Fast trains on the West Coast Main Line reach London in under two hours, a tram line runs to Birmingham, and motorways and a nearby airport serve the region. The University of Wolverhampton and its city campus bring more than twenty thousand students.
