Wŏnju

Wŏnju is the largest city in Gangwon Province, in the north-eastern part of South Korea. It lies in a basin among wooded hills roughly a hundred kilometres east of Seoul, at the point where the mountainous interior of the peninsula begins to give way to the plains of Gyeonggi. This position, on the historic road between the capital and the east coast, has shaped the city's role for centuries.

Around 360,000 people live in Wŏnju, making it the most populous city in a province otherwise known for forests, ski slopes and national parks. Its economy rests on an unusual specialisation: Wŏnju has become South Korea's leading centre for the medical device industry, with a cluster of manufacturers, research institutes and testing facilities producing everything from diagnostic equipment to dental instruments. Public administration also plays a growing part, since several national agencies, including the health insurance and tourism organisations, were relocated here to spread government functions beyond the capital region.

The area has been settled since ancient times and was an administrative seat under the Goryeo and Joseon dynasties, when it governed a large mountainous territory. Traces of that past remain in old fortress sites and Confucian school buildings scattered around the district. During the Korean War the region saw heavy fighting, and for decades afterwards Wŏnju hosted substantial military installations, including a large United States base that closed in the 2010s. The land it occupied has since been redeveloped, and the city has grown steadily with new residential districts and an innovation complex on its edge.

Wŏnju's best known attraction is Chiaksan National Park, whose ridges rise directly to the east of the city. Its trails lead past waterfalls and through dense forest to peaks with wide views, and the ancient temple of Guryongsa sits among old trees at the foot of the mountain. The Sogeumsan suspension bridge, strung high across a rocky gorge with a glass-floored viewpoint and a nearby canopy walkway, has become one of the most photographed sights in the province. Closer to the centre, Museum SAN, designed by the architect Tadao Ando, combines paper art, contemporary galleries, a stone garden and a James Turrell light installation in a striking hillside setting.

Cultural life is quieter than in Seoul but genuine. The city hosts an annual dance festival, a lively traditional market and a growing café scene, and local specialities such as buckwheat dishes and mountain vegetables reflect the produce of the surrounding hills. Toji Cultural Centre commemorates the novelist Pak Kyongni, who wrote much of her epic work here.

Transport has improved dramatically since the opening of the Gyeonggang high-speed railway, which brings central Seoul within about an hour. Expressways run west to the capital and east to the coast, and city buses serve the districts. Higher education is anchored by the Mirae campus of Yonsei University, with its respected medical school and hospital, alongside Sangji University and several colleges.

Wŏnju offers a rare combination of mountain scenery, modern architecture and easy access to Seoul, and it has become one of the most liveable mid-sized cities in South Korea.
