Wŏnsan

Wŏnsan is a port city on the east coast of North Korea and the capital of Kangwon Province. It stands on a sheltered bay of the Sea of Japan, protected by the low Kalma peninsula and a scatter of small islands, with the Taebaek Mountains rising steeply behind the town. The setting, combining calm water, pine-covered slopes and long sandy beaches, has made it the most attractive coastal city in the country.

Its population is estimated at around three hundred and sixty thousand. Wŏnsan is important as a naval base, a fishing and cargo port and the eastern terminus of the main route across the peninsula from Pyongyang, roughly two hundred kilometres away. In recent years it has also become the focus of the state's most ambitious tourism plans.

The harbour was opened to foreign trade in 1880, when it was one of the first Korean ports to admit outside merchants, and under Japanese rule it grew rapidly as an industrial and shipping centre known as Genzan. It was heavily bombarded and blockaded during the Korean War, when the United States Navy maintained one of the longest sieges in modern naval history off its shore, and the city was rebuilt afterwards on a broad grid plan with wide avenues and low apartment blocks.

The best-known attraction is Songdowon, a beach resort shaded by ancient pines that has hosted an international children's camp for decades. The Kalma coastal tourist area, a long line of hotels and leisure facilities built along the sand spit, was developed as a flagship national project. Inland, the Masikryong ski resort brought winter sport to the region, while the celebrated Kumgangsan, the Diamond Mountains, lie to the south and are among the most admired landscapes in Korea. Ullim Falls, a broad cascade in the mountains west of the city, is a common excursion.

Cultural life follows the pattern of North Korean cities, with theatres, a youth palace, sports grounds and monumental squares used for public ceremonies. Seafood dominates the local table, and the fish market and cold noodle restaurants are part of the city's identity. Parks along the waterfront and the boat trip to Jangdok Islet are popular with residents in summer.

Transport centres on the railway, which links Wŏnsan north towards Hamhung and Chongjin, south along the coast, and west to the capital. A motorway crosses the mountains to Pyongyang, and Kalma airport, rebuilt with a long runway, serves both civil and military purposes. The port handles coastal shipping and fishing fleets.

Education is represented by the Wŏnsan University of Agriculture, teacher training and technical colleges, and a well-known school for physical education, reflecting the city's role as a regional centre for the province.

Wŏnsan is significant as North Korea's principal eastern seaport and as the place the country has chosen to showcase to visitors. Its combination of mountains, pine forest and open coast gives it a natural beauty that remains striking regardless of how few outsiders are able to see it.
