Woodlands
Woodlands occupies the northern edge of Singapore, facing the Johor Strait and the Malaysian city of Johor Bahru across a narrow stretch of water. It is one of the largest planned new towns on the island, built on gently sloping ground that was once covered in rubber and pineapple plantations, and it takes its name from the wooded country that early surveyors found here. The Causeway, a road and rail embankment just over a kilometre long, links it directly to the Malaysian mainland.
Around two hundred and fifty thousand people live in Woodlands, which makes it one of the most populous districts in Singapore. The great majority occupy public housing flats built by the Housing and Development Board, arranged in neighbourhoods around markets, schools, sports halls and community centres. Its economy is closely tied to its position on the border. Woodlands Checkpoint handles an extraordinary volume of daily traffic, with hundreds of thousands of people crossing between the two countries for work, study, shopping and family visits, and the district also contains a wafer fabrication park, industrial estates and the offices and workshops that support the northern shipyards.
The area has a longer history than its modern appearance suggests. Small coastal settlements and plantations existed here in the nineteenth century, and the Causeway, completed in 1923, transformed the district into the main gateway to the peninsula. During the Second World War the northern shore became the front line of the battle for Singapore, and the nearby Kranji War Cemetery commemorates thousands of Commonwealth servicemen. Development as a new town began in the 1970s, and Woodlands has been continually expanded and renewed since then, with a regional centre now taking shape to give the north its own commercial hub.
Woodlands Waterfront Park stretches along the strait with a long pier, sea breezes and views of Johor Bahru, while Admiralty Park contains the longest and steepest slides in the country and preserves a patch of secondary forest with monkeys and monitor lizards. Causeway Point and the surrounding malls form a busy shopping district around the transport interchange, and the Woodlands Town Garden, the sports complex and a network of park connectors serve everyday recreation. Nearby Sembawang and Kranji offer beaches, hot springs and small farms that feel far removed from the centre of the city.
Daily life reflects the multicultural character of Singapore, with Chinese, Malay, Indian and Eurasian residents sharing the same blocks, hawker centres and festivals. Republic Polytechnic, with its distinctive campus of curved buildings and open plazas, brings thousands of students into the district, alongside numerous primary and secondary schools. Two lines of the rail network, the North South Line and the Thomson East Coast Line, meet at Woodlands, an extensive bus network feeds the interchange, and a new rapid transit link across the strait to Johor Bahru is under construction.
Woodlands is important as the northern gateway of Singapore, a large and well planned residential town and the point where the island connects daily to the Malaysian mainland.
