Xiangtan
Xiangtan is a prefecture-level city in central Hunan Province, China, situated along the Xiang River approximately 40 kilometers south of the provincial capital Changsha. With a population of approximately 3 million, Xiangtan is an important industrial and cultural city in Hunan and holds a special place in modern Chinese history as the hometown of Mao Zedong, the founder of the People's Republic of China and one of the most influential political figures of the 20th century.
Mao Zedong was born in the village of Shaoshan, located within Xiangtan Prefecture, on December 26, 1893. The Shaoshan scenic area, a short drive from Xiangtan city, has become one of the most visited patriotic tourism destinations in China. It includes Mao Zedong's former residence — a traditional farmhouse where he grew up — the Mao Zedong Memorial Hall, various revolutionary memorials, and a famous bronze statue of Mao. Millions of visitors, including many domestic tourists making pilgrimages to pay respects to the founding leader, visit Shaoshan each year.
Xiangtan has a rich cultural heritage beyond its famous son. The city has a long history as a commercial and intellectual center along the Xiang River corridor. The Qishan Scenic Area and various ancient temples, including the Haifoshan Guanyin Temple, provide cultural and spiritual attractions. Xiangtan was also the home of Qi Baishi (1864–1957), considered one of the greatest Chinese painters of the 20th century, known particularly for his vivid and expressive paintings of shrimp, flowers, and everyday subjects. The Qi Baishi Memorial Museum celebrates his life and work.
Xiangtan is an important industrial city, with a concentration of manufacturing in steel, engineering, and chemicals. The Jiuhua Economic Development Zone has attracted significant investment in new industries, and the city has benefited from its integration into the Changsha-Zhuzhou-Xiangtan (Chang-Zhu-Tan) city cluster, one of China's designated national urban development zones, which aims to create a polycentric metropolitan region in central Hunan.
The local culture strongly reflects Hunan Province traditions. Hunan cuisine, known for its bold use of chili peppers, garlic, and fermented ingredients, is a point of pride throughout the province, and Xiangtan is no exception. Local specialties including Mao's Red-Braised Pork (Mao's Braised Pork Belly with fermented tofu), a dish supposedly favored by Mao Zedong, has become both a local culinary tradition and a tourist attraction.
High-speed rail and expressways connect Xiangtan to Changsha, Zhuzhou, and beyond. With its extraordinary historical connection to Mao Zedong, significant industrial base, artistic heritage through Qi Baishi, and integration into the dynamic Chang-Zhu-Tan metropolitan cluster, Xiangtan is a city of remarkable depth and continuing importance in central China.
