Xichang
Xichang is a city located in the Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture of Sichuan Province in southwestern China. Sitting at an elevation of approximately 1,500 meters above sea level, it enjoys a mild climate that has earned it the nickname the "City of Eternal Spring." The surrounding landscape is dramatic — mountains, plateaus, and the magnificent Qionghai Lake define its natural setting and make it a destination of scenic beauty. With a population of around 800,000, Xichang serves as the political, economic, and cultural center of Liangshan Prefecture.
The city has deep historical roots, having been an important outpost along the Southern Silk Road — the ancient trade route known as the Tea Horse Road that connected China with Southeast Asia and South Asia. For centuries, Xichang was a hub for merchants, travelers, and armies moving through the difficult terrain of the Southwest. The Yi ethnic group, one of China's largest minority nationalities, has long inhabited this region and continues to shape the cultural identity of the city and surrounding villages.
Xichang is perhaps best known internationally as the home of the Xichang Satellite Launch Center, one of China's most important space launch facilities. Established in 1978 and fully operational since the 1980s, the center has launched numerous satellites, lunar exploration missions, and communication vehicles into orbit. It played a pivotal role in China's Chang'e lunar program and remains central to the country's ongoing space ambitions. The launch center has turned Xichang into an unexpected gateway city for space technology tourism.
Qionghai Lake is the city's most celebrated natural attraction. This freshwater lake, covering about 31 square kilometers, is renowned for its crystal-clear waters and surrounding wetlands. The lakeside area has been developed into a scenic park with walking trails, traditional Yi-style pavilions, and bird-watching zones. Lushan Mountain, visible from the city, offers hiking routes and cool retreats during warmer months. The nearby螺髻山 (Luoji Mountain) features ancient forests, waterfalls, and high-altitude lakes.
The Yi Torch Festival is one of the most vibrant cultural celebrations in China, held every July in and around Xichang. During this festival, thousands of torches are lit at night, traditional Yi music fills the air, and residents wear elaborate embroidered costumes. This event draws visitors from across China and increasingly from abroad, showcasing the richness of Yi culture including song, dance, wrestling, and horse racing.
Xichang's economy benefits from agriculture — notably pomegranates and tobacco — as well as manufacturing, tourism, and its strategic importance to China's space industry. The city's blend of ethnic heritage, natural scenery, ancient trade history, and modern space technology gives it a uniquely multifaceted character that distinguishes it from other cities in Sichuan Province.
