Xuchang
Xuchang is a prefecture-level city located in the central part of Henan Province in central China, situated on the North China Plain between the Yellow River to the north and the Huai River basin to the south. With a population of several million across its urban and rural areas, Xuchang is an important agricultural and industrial city in a region that has been central to Chinese civilization for thousands of years. The city's flat terrain and fertile soil have made it one of China's most productive agricultural zones.
Xuchang has a long and distinguished history. During the Three Kingdoms period in the third century CE, the city served as the capital of the Wei Kingdom under the warlord Cao Cao, one of the most celebrated figures in Chinese history. Xuchang was then known as Xu, and it was here that Cao Cao established his base of power and famously kept the Han emperor as a nominal ruler while consolidating his own authority. The Han Wei Ancient City Site and associated historical parks celebrate this pivotal chapter in Chinese history and attract visitors interested in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms.
Xuchang is known throughout China as the wig capital of the world. The city and surrounding region produce a staggering proportion of the world's supply of hair products, wigs, and hair extensions. Hundreds of factories and trading companies in Xuchang process and export human hair products to markets in Africa, North America, and Europe, supporting a multibillion-dollar industry that employs hundreds of thousands of workers and craftspeople in the area.
Beyond its unique hair product industry, Xuchang has a significant agricultural sector. The region is a major producer of wheat and tobacco, and a developed food processing industry adds value to agricultural output. The city also has manufacturing capacity in machinery, chemical products, and building materials.
Xuchang is also associated with flower cultivation and the peony in particular, sharing with Luoyang a tradition of peony growing that stretches back over a thousand years. The Xuchang Botanical Garden and various parks in the city celebrate this floral heritage, and peony festivals draw visitors in spring when the flowers are in bloom.
The city is served by rail connections, including high-speed rail linking Xuchang with Zhengzhou and other cities in Henan and beyond. National highways and expressways provide road connectivity across the North China Plain. The Zhengzhou-Kaifeng-Xuchang urban belt is developing as a major economic corridor in the region.
Xuchang has several universities and colleges, including Xuchang University, offering programs in education, engineering, arts, and sciences that serve the local and regional student population. Technical and vocational schools support the city's manufacturing and agricultural industries with specialized training.
Xuchang's blend of ancient history, unusual commercial distinction, and agricultural productivity makes it a fascinating city in the heart of China. From Cao Cao's wartime capital to the global hair products industry, Xuchang's story is one of reinvention and resilience across two thousand years of Chinese history.
