Xuzhou
Xuzhou is a prefecture-level city located in the northwestern part of Jiangsu Province in eastern China, situated at the intersection of several major rivers and rail lines in a strategic position at the junction of four provinces. With a population of over nine million across its administrative area, Xuzhou is one of the largest cities in Jiangsu and serves as a major transportation hub, industrial center, and historically significant city in the heart of the North China Plain.
Xuzhou has one of the most dramatic historical records of any city in China. Known in ancient times as Pengcheng, it was the seat of the Kingdom of Chu and the birthplace of Xiang Yu, the powerful warlord who competed with Liu Bang for control of China following the fall of the Qin Dynasty in the third century BCE. The decisive Battle of Gaixia, which ended the Chu-Han Contention and established the Han Dynasty, was fought near the city. Xuzhou was subsequently the capital of several kingdoms during the Han Dynasty and remains a site of immense archaeological importance.
The Han Dynasty heritage of Xuzhou is preserved at several outstanding archaeological sites and museums. The Han Terracotta Warriors Museum in Xuzhou displays a collection of life-sized painted pottery soldiers discovered in the Han royal mausoleum, predating their more famous Qin counterparts in Xi'an. The Xuzhou Museum houses an extensive collection of Han-era jade suits and artifacts, including some of the finest jade burial garments ever discovered. The Yunlong Mountain Scenic Area features ancient rock carvings and Buddhist temples overlooking the city.
Xuzhou is known as the capital of Chinese engineering machinery. The Xuzhou Construction Machinery Group, or XCMG, is one of the world's largest manufacturers of construction and mining equipment, with its products sold across more than 180 countries. This single company has established Xuzhou's reputation as a global center of heavy machinery manufacturing and has inspired an entire ecosystem of related industries in the region.
The city's transportation geography makes it one of the most important rail junctions in China, where the Longhai Railway and the Beijing-Shanghai Railway intersect. High-speed rail services now link Xuzhou with Beijing, Shanghai, and other major cities across the country in just a few hours. The Xuzhou Guanyin Airport and a dense network of expressways further strengthen the city's connectivity.
China University of Mining and Technology, one of China's most specialized and respected technical universities, is located in Xuzhou, reflecting the region's historic connection to coal mining. Jiangsu Normal University and several other higher education institutions also contribute to a strong academic community in the city.
Xuzhou's combination of ancient heritage, extraordinary archaeological richness, industrial powerhouse status, and transportation centrality makes it one of the most strategically and culturally important cities in eastern China. Few cities can claim such a decisive role in the founding of China's most enduring imperial dynasty while simultaneously leading the world in construction machinery manufacturing.
