Yichang
Yichang is a prefecture-level city in western Hubei Province in central China, located at the point where the Yangtze River emerges from the Xiling Gorge into the middle Yangtze plains. With a population of approximately 4.1 million people, Yichang is best known internationally as the site of the Three Gorges Dam, the world's largest hydroelectric power station, and as the gateway to the spectacular Three Gorges scenic region, one of China's most celebrated natural landscapes.
Yichang has a history of over two thousand years and served as an important military and commercial post throughout Chinese dynastic history due to its position at the strategic entrance to the Three Gorges. The city was opened as a treaty port under British pressure in 1876 and developed as a point of contact between Western commercial interests and the interior of China. In the early 20th century, Yichang was the starting point for river steamers navigating the treacherous Yangtze gorges, requiring experienced local pilots to guide vessels through the rocky narrows.
The Three Gorges Dam, completed in 2008 and located approximately 40 kilometers west of the city center, is an engineering achievement of staggering scale. The dam stretches nearly two kilometers in width, rises 185 meters, and created a reservoir extending 600 kilometers upstream to Chongqing. It generates approximately 22,500 megawatts of electricity, making it the world's largest power station by installed capacity, and has played a critical role in reducing Yangtze flooding and supporting navigation along the river. The dam and its ship locks, which raise vessels 113 meters through a series of five chambers, can be observed from visitor centers and viewpoints.
Yichang serves as the primary embarkation and disembarkation point for Yangtze River cruise ships traversing the Three Gorges, the breathtaking series of canyons including Qutang Gorge, Wu Gorge, and Xiling Gorge that carve through the mountains between Chongqing and Yichang. The Gezhouba Dam, an older and smaller dam just west of the city, provides additional hydroelectric power and created a navigational lock system for river traffic.
The city is also the birthplace of Qu Yuan, China's first named major poet and the figure commemorated by the Dragon Boat Festival, one of China's most important traditional celebrations. The Qu Yuan Memorial Hall and Qu Yuan's hometown in nearby Zigui district are important cultural and pilgrimage sites.
Transportation includes Sanxia Airport with domestic connections, expressways, and ferry services on the Yangtze River.
Yichang's combination of extraordinary engineering achievement, spectacular natural scenery, ancient poetic heritage, and role as the gateway to one of China's greatest river journeys make it an essential destination for anyone exploring central China.
