Yiwu
Yiwu is a county-level city in central Zhejiang Province in eastern China, located approximately 100 kilometers south of Hangzhou. With a population of over 1.8 million people, including a substantial community of foreign traders and residents, Yiwu has achieved global recognition far exceeding what its size might suggest. The city is home to the world's largest small commodities wholesale market, making it arguably the single most important trading center for small manufactured goods on the planet.
Yiwu's transformation from a modest agricultural county into a global trading hub began in the 1980s, when local authorities encouraged small-scale private commerce in what became a revolutionary experiment in market economics during China's reform era. The Yiwu International Trade City, a vast complex of wholesale market buildings covering over five million square meters and housing more than 70,000 shop booths, has since expanded across multiple phases and today sells over 2.1 million types of goods, ranging from toys and electronics to clothing, hardware, and holiday decorations.
The city is famous internationally for being the source of a staggering proportion of the world's Christmas ornaments, cheap consumer goods, novelty items, and party supplies. Buyers from over 200 countries and regions visit Yiwu regularly to source goods, and the city maintains a uniquely cosmopolitan character for a small Chinese city, with entire neighborhoods, restaurants, mosques, and services catering to Arab, African, South Asian, and Central Asian traders who have settled here permanently or visit frequently.
Despite its commercial reputation, Yiwu has historical and cultural assets as well. The city is the birthplace of Zong Ze, a Song Dynasty general known for his resistance against Jurchen Jin invasions, and of the legendary ancient poet Luo Binwang. Local traditions of Wu opera and folk crafts reflect the deeper cultural roots of this Zhejiang community.
Transportation in Yiwu has been developed to support its commercial status, with Yiwu Airport offering domestic and some international flights, as well as high-speed rail connections to Shanghai, Hangzhou, and Wenzhou. The Yiwu-Madrid freight train, inaugurated in 2014, represents one of the world's longest cargo train routes and symbolizes the city's integration into global supply chains.
Yiwu University and several vocational training institutions provide education closely linked to trade, commerce, and manufacturing, supporting the needs of a city built on enterprise and exchange.
Yiwu's extraordinary commercial energy, remarkable cultural diversity, and status as the world's small goods capital make it one of the most unique and economically significant small cities on earth, a place where globalization is visible and tangible in every shop booth and bustling alley.
