Yueyang is a prefecture-level city located in the northeastern corner of Hunan Province in south-central China, situated on the eastern shore of Dongting Lake, China's second-largest freshwater lake, where the lake connects to the Yangtze River. The original Yueyang Tower, which has been rebuilt and expanded numerous times over the centuries, stands today as a beautifully restored example of classical Chinese pavilion architecture. Its three-tiered roof and elegant proportions make it one of the most photogenic historical structures in Hunan. The tower and its surrounding park on the shores of Dongting Lake form a picturesque ensemble that attracts millions of visitors annually.

Dongting Lake itself, though reduced in size from historical levels due to siltation and land reclamation, remains an important ecological zone. The Dongting Lake National Nature Reserve protects the habitat of migratory birds and the critically endangered Yangtze finless porpoise, making the area significant for wildlife conservation.
