Zagreb

Zagreb is the capital and largest city of Croatia, situated in the northwestern part of the country at the foot of Medvednica Mountain and along the banks of the Sava River. As the political, cultural, and economic heart of Croatia, the city is home to approximately one million people and serves as the main hub for the entire nation.

The city's history stretches back to medieval times, with the twin settlements of Kaptol and Gradec forming its core in the eleventh and thirteenth centuries respectively. These two hills, once rivals, eventually merged to create Zagreb, and their legacy is still visible today in the well-preserved upper town known as Gornji Grad. Over the centuries, Zagreb grew under Austro-Hungarian influence, gaining grandeur and sophistication that shaped much of its architectural character.

Among Zagreb's most celebrated landmarks is the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, whose neo-Gothic spires dominate the city skyline. Nearby, St. Mark's Church in the upper town is famous for its colorful tiled roof bearing the coats of arms of Croatia and Zagreb. The Lotrščak Tower, a medieval fortification, offers panoramic views and fires a cannon every day at noon, a tradition that has continued for over a century.

The city is rich in cultural offerings, hosting over thirty museums and numerous galleries. The Museum of Broken Relationships, a quirky and internationally acclaimed institution, draws visitors from around the world with its collection of personal mementos from failed love stories. The Mimara Museum houses an impressive art collection spanning thousands of years, while the Croatian National Theatre provides world-class opera, ballet, and drama performances.

Zagreb's café culture is legendary, with the daily ritual known as špica — a leisurely Saturday morning coffee stroll along Tkalčićeva Street — being a cherished local tradition. The Dolac open-air market near Ban Jelačić Square bursts with fresh produce and local goods every morning, offering an authentic slice of everyday Zagreb life.

The city is well connected by an efficient tram network operated by ZET, making it easy to navigate without a car. Zagreb Airport links the city to dozens of European destinations, and regular train and bus connections serve the rest of Croatia and neighboring countries.

Zagreb is home to the University of Zagreb, one of the oldest universities in Southeast Europe, founded in 1669. The city supports a vibrant academic and research community, with numerous faculties and scientific institutions contributing to Croatia's intellectual life.

Zagreb strikes a balance between Central European elegance and Mediterranean warmth. Its walkable streets, lively cultural scene, and welcoming atmosphere make it an increasingly popular destination for travelers seeking an authentic European city experience without the overwhelming crowds of more famous capitals.
