Zaporizhzhya
Zaporizhzhya is a major industrial city located in southeastern Ukraine on the banks of the Dnieper River, approximately 70 kilometers north of the Azov Sea coast. With a pre-war population of approximately 710,000, it is one of Ukraine's largest cities and one of its most important industrial centers. The city's name, meaning "beyond the rapids" in Ukrainian, refers to the famous Dnieper cataracts that were historically impassable to river navigation and that historically marked a frontier of Ukrainian Cossack territory.
The area around Zaporizhzhya has deep historical roots in Ukrainian Cossack culture. Khortytsia Island in the Dnieper, located within the modern city, was the historic base of the Zaporozhian Sich — the fortified headquarters of the Zaporozhian Cossacks, the semi-autonomous warrior community that played a defining role in Ukrainian and Eastern European history from the 16th to 18th centuries. The National Zaporizhian Sich Reserve on Khortytsia Island preserves this heritage and is one of Ukraine's most visited historical sites.
Zaporizhzhya's modern identity was shaped by Soviet industrialization in the 1920s and 1930s. The construction of the DniproHES hydroelectric dam — one of the largest in Europe at the time — across the Dnieper River transformed the city into a major industrial powerhouse. The dam provided electricity for a massive complex of steelworks, aluminum smelters, and chemical plants that became the backbone of the Soviet and later Ukrainian economy. Motor Sich, the city's internationally known aircraft engine manufacturer, remains one of Ukraine's most important defense industry companies.
The city also hosts the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, located in the nearby city of Enerhodar, which is the largest nuclear power facility in Europe. During Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine that began in February 2022, the plant came under Russian military control and became a focal point of international concern about nuclear safety, making Zaporizhzhya a city of global geopolitical significance in this period.
Before the war, Zaporizhzhya had a developed urban infrastructure with theaters, museums, parks along the Dnieper, and a vibrant city center. Khortytsia Island, with its natural landscapes and historical reconstructions, offered both cultural and recreational opportunities. The city's transportation links included an airport, rail connections to Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities, and river navigation.
Zaporizhzhya's legacy as the birthplace of Cossack democracy, its Soviet-era industrial might, and its contemporary significance in Ukraine's wartime ordeal make it a city whose history resonates far beyond its size — a place where the deep currents of Eastern European history continue to flow as powerfully as the Dnieper itself.
