Zhangjiakou
Zhangjiakou is a prefecture-level city in the northwestern part of Hebei Province, China, located approximately 180 kilometers northwest of Beijing on the edge of the Inner Mongolian Plateau. With a population of approximately 4.6 million across the prefecture and around 600,000 in the urban core, Zhangjiakou has historically served as a strategic gateway between the Chinese heartland and the northern steppes. Its name is also known in the West as Kalgan, under which it appeared in historical accounts of the Silk Road and Inner Asian trade.
Zhangjiakou's strategic importance derives from its position at the northern edge of the Yan Mountains and on major routes passing through the Great Wall of China. The city sits near important passes in the Wall that connected northern China to Mongolia, making it historically a critical military and commercial junction. During the Qing Dynasty, Zhangjiakou became a prosperous trading post for the tea-horse trade with Mongolia and Russia, and significant merchant communities established themselves here. The city was an important station on routes that later became part of the Trans-Siberian Railway's connections to China.
Zhangjiakou co-hosted the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, serving as the venue for all the cross-country skiing, biathlon, ski jumping, and Nordic combined events. The construction of world-class winter sports facilities — including the National Cross-Country Skiing Center at Chongli — transformed Zhangjiakou into a major winter sports destination. A high-speed rail line connecting Beijing to Zhangjiakou via dedicated tunnels through the mountains was built specifically for the Olympics and has since opened the city up to rapid tourism and development.
The Bashang Grasslands in the northern part of Zhangjiakou Prefecture offer some of the closest access to the Inner Mongolian steppe landscape from Beijing. Rolling grasslands, wildflowers, horse riding, and traditional Mongolian yurt (ger) accommodations attract large numbers of Beijing residents seeking natural scenery and open space. These grasslands are a popular destination for domestic tourism, particularly in summer.
Zhangjiakou has significant renewable energy development, particularly wind and solar power, taking advantage of the strong winds and high solar irradiance of the plateau environment. The city is becoming an important hub in China's transition toward clean energy, with large wind farms visible across the surrounding landscapes.
Zhangjiakou's combination of Olympic heritage, dramatic mountain-to-grassland landscape, Silk Road history, and growing renewable energy sector makes it a city of diverse significance in Hebei Province — one that has leveraged its unique geography to establish a distinctive profile both within China and on the world stage.
