Zhanjiang
Zhanjiang is a prefecture-level city on the Leizhou Peninsula in the southernmost part of Guangdong Province, China, located along the Beibu Gulf and facing the island of Hainan across the Qiongzhou Strait. With a population of approximately 7.3 million people, Zhanjiang is one of the largest cities in Guangdong Province and serves as the most important port city in western Guangdong, with a strategic position at the intersection of South China Sea shipping routes.
The area has been inhabited since ancient times and served as an important port under various names through Chinese dynastic history. In 1898, France forced the Qing Dynasty to lease the Guangzhouwan territory, which included the Zhanjiang area, and the city developed significantly under French colonial administration until Japan occupied it during World War II. The French colonial influence can still be detected in some elements of the older urban architecture near the Xiashan district. After the People's Republic was established in 1949, Zhanjiang regained Chinese sovereignty and continued to develop as a major deep-water port and industrial center.
Zhanjiang's economy is anchored by its port, which is one of China's major coal and oil import terminals and a significant hub for international shipping. The city is also a major center for the steel industry, with the Baosteel Zhanjiang Iron and Steel Base representing one of China's largest single steel investment projects. The petrochemical industry, fishing, and seafood processing are other pillars of the local economy. Zhanjiang is one of China's most important fishing ports and seafood production bases, providing oysters, shrimp, fish, and other marine products to markets across the country.
The natural scenery of the Zhanjiang region is remarkable and largely underappreciated by international travelers. The Zhanjiang Mangrove National Nature Reserve protects one of the most extensive mangrove ecosystems in China, providing critical habitat for migratory birds and serving as a nursery for marine life. The Huguangyan Maar Lake, formed by an ancient volcanic eruption, is a perfectly round lake of exceptional clarity and ecological value, designated as a national geopark. The beautiful sandy beaches and clear waters around Naozhou Island offer coastal recreation opportunities.
Zhanjiang is also the southern terminus of a major high-speed railway line connecting it to Guangzhou and serves as an important logistics hub for the development of western Guangdong and the broader Beibu Gulf economic region.
Guangdong Ocean University, headquartered in Zhanjiang, is one of China's leading institutions for maritime studies, fisheries science, and ocean engineering, reflecting the city's deep ties to the sea.
Zhanjiang's combination of strategic port importance, industrial strength, extraordinary natural coastal environment, and seafood culture make it one of the most geographically distinctive and economically significant cities in southern China.
