Zhaoqing
Zhaoqing is a prefecture-level city located in the western part of Guangdong Province in southern China, situated along the Xi River where it enters the plains of the Pearl River Delta. With a population of approximately 4.1 million people, Zhaoqing serves as an important gateway between Guangdong's densely populated eastern delta and the more mountainous western parts of the province. The city is known for its scenic limestone karst landscape, ancient cultural heritage, and growing position within the Greater Bay Area economic region.
Zhaoqing has a history spanning more than two thousand years. During the Han Dynasty, the area was established as an administrative center, and it grew in importance during the Tang and Song dynasties as a regional hub for the western part of Guangdong. During the late Ming Dynasty, Zhaoqing gained international significance as the base from which the Italian Jesuit missionary Matteo Ricci began his mission to China in 1583. Ricci lived in Zhaoqing for several years and introduced Western scientific knowledge, maps, and art to China, making the city an unlikely center of early Sino-European cultural exchange.
The most celebrated attraction in Zhaoqing is the Seven Star Crags Scenic Area, a karst landscape of seven spectacular limestone peaks surrounding a series of interconnected lakes in the center of the city. The peaks, traditionally said to resemble the stars of the Big Dipper constellation, rise dramatically from the water and are connected by causeways and bridges, creating one of the most picturesque urban natural parks in China. Dinghu Mountain, a national nature reserve located east of the city, is one of China's oldest nature reserves and a UNESCO Man and Biosphere Reserve, known for its lush subtropical forests and remarkable biodiversity.
The cultural life of Zhaoqing reflects Cantonese traditions, with local Cantonese opera performances, traditional festivals, and dragon boat racing on the Xi River being important parts of community life. Zhaoqing is particularly known for its traditional ink slab craft, and the Duanxi inkstone, produced from a special purple stone found in the area, is considered the finest writing ink slab in China and has been treasured by calligraphers and scholars for over a thousand years. Cantonese cuisine, featuring fresh river fish, roasted meats, and various dim sum specialties, reflects the local culinary tradition.
Transportation in Zhaoqing benefits from its position along major Pearl River Delta transport corridors. Expressways and a high-speed railway connect Zhaoqing to Guangzhou, and the Xi River waterway connects it to cities to the west. A light rail system serves the urban area.
Zhaoqing University and several other institutions provide higher education for the city's population and support the development of local industries.
Zhaoqing's economy is driven by manufacturing, tourism, and agriculture, with growing investment in new energy vehicles and equipment manufacturing. Its combination of extraordinary natural beauty, rich cultural heritage, and strategic position within the Pearl River Delta economic zone makes Zhaoqing a city of growing importance and appeal in southern China.
