Zhaotong is a prefecture-level city located in the northeastern corner of Yunnan Province in southwestern China, bordering Sichuan Province to the north and Guizhou Province to the east. Situated on the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau at elevations generally ranging from 1,000 to 2,000 meters, Zhaotong occupies a rugged, mountainous landscape carved by deep river valleys, including portions of the upper Jinsha River, which forms part of the Yangtze River system. The city's geographic position at the crossroads of three provinces has historically given it strategic and commercial importance in a landlocked and mountainous part of China.

The Yanjin County section of the Jinsha River gorge is one of the narrowest inhabited river valleys in China, where the river rushes through canyon walls so close together that the town built along its banks receives only limited sunlight. This extraordinary geography has made Yanjin famous throughout China as a curiosity of human settlement.

Agriculture remains central to Zhaotong's economy, with apples from the region earning a strong reputation across Yunnan and beyond. The cool highland climate and fertile soils produce some of China's most prized apple varieties. Coal mining and emerging manufacturing sectors also contribute to the local economy, and hydroelectric power generated from the Jinsha River's fast-flowing waters is increasingly important.

Transportation has improved substantially in recent years. Expressways now connect Zhaotong to Kunming, Yunnan's provincial capital, cutting travel times dramatically. Rail connections and an expanding airport have further integrated this once-remote region into China's national transportation network, facilitating both economic development and tourism.

Education and public services have expanded significantly, with new schools and hospitals reaching previously underserved rural communities. Zhaotong University serves as the main institution of higher learning in the prefecture, offering programs across engineering, education, and the humanities.
