Zhenjiang

Zhenjiang is a prefecture-level city located in the southern part of Jiangsu Province in eastern China, situated at the junction of the Yangtze River and the ancient Grand Canal — one of the most historically significant geographical intersections in all of China. With a population of approximately 3.2 million, Zhenjiang is an important industrial and historical city in the heart of the Yangtze River Delta, well positioned between the provincial capital Nanjing and the major commercial hub Changzhou.

The history of Zhenjiang spans over three thousand years and is deeply connected to the strategic importance of its location at the meeting of two of China's most vital waterways. The city was an important crossing point on the Yangtze River and a critical node on the Grand Canal that linked the wealthy south with the political capitals of the north for over 1,400 years. During the Tang and Song dynasties, Zhenjiang was a prosperous trading city of considerable national importance. In the 19th century, the city was one of the treaty ports opened to foreign trade following the Opium Wars, and British, French, and American concession areas were established here.

Zhenjiang is home to several remarkable historical sites. Jinshan Temple, situated on Golden Mountain Island on the Yangtze River's edge, is one of China's most famous Buddhist temples and has been associated with important legends of Chinese literature, most notably the story of the White Snake (Bai She Zhuan). The temple, rising dramatically from the summit of its island, is one of the most painted and photographed temples in Jiangsu. Beigu Mountain, associated with the Ganlu Temple where the Three Kingdoms period hero Liu Bei married Lady Sun, and Jiaoshan Mountain, home to a fortified complex of ancient temples and gardens, are other important scenic and historical sites.

The Zhenjiang Museum occupies a Victorian-era building in the former British concession area and provides excellent historical context for the city's history. The Yingtian Pagoda on Yunlong Mountain and the ancient ferry crossing sites along the Yangtze provide further windows into the city's long past. The world of traditional Zhenjiang life is celebrated in the local cuisine, particularly the Zhenjiang-style preserved pork knuckle (pork trotters in vinegar sauce) and Zhenjiang vinegar, considered one of China's four great vinegars and prized for its mellow and complex flavor.

Zhenjiang is an important industrial city, with sectors in chemicals, food processing, machinery, and electronics. The Yangzhong River Island Economic Development Zone is a growing area of manufacturing activity. The city's position along the Yangtze River Economic Belt and its proximity to the Nanjing metropolitan area have made it an attractive location for industrial investment.

High-speed rail and expressways connect Zhenjiang to Shanghai, Nanjing, and other major cities in the Yangtze Delta. With its exceptional historical and cultural heritage, famous temples, legendary culinary traditions, and strategic location, Zhenjiang is one of the most historically rich and underappreciated cities in Jiangsu Province.
