Zhytomyr
Zhytomyr stands on the Teteriv River in northern Ukraine, about a hundred and forty kilometres west of Kyiv, where the wooded Polissia lowlands meet the granite uplands of Volhynia. The river has cut a dramatic gorge through pink and grey granite at the edge of the city, and rock outcrops, pine forest and steep wooded banks come surprisingly close to the centre. Zhytomyr is the capital of its region and has around two hundred and fifty thousand inhabitants.
It is one of the older cities in Ukraine. Local tradition dates its founding to the ninth century, and it appears in the chronicles in 1240, when it was destroyed during the Mongol invasion. Later it passed to the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and then to the Polish crown, receiving Magdeburg town rights in the fifteenth century. After the partitions of Poland it became the seat of the Volhynian governorate in the Russian Empire, and grew into a provincial capital with a mixed Ukrainian, Polish, Jewish, Russian and German population. That diversity shaped its architecture, its schools and its printing houses, and it left a legacy of loss as well, for the Jewish community that made up much of the city was destroyed during the Second World War.
Zhytomyr has an unusual claim on the history of space flight. Sergei Korolev, the chief designer behind the first artificial satellite and the first crewed spaceflight, was born here in 1907, and the house of his childhood is now part of the Korolev Cosmonautics Museum, one of the largest collections of space technology in Europe, with rocket engines, capsules and lunar equipment on display. The writer Volodymyr Korolenko and the pianist Sviatoslav Richter were also born in the city, each with a museum or memorial to their name.
Other landmarks include the eighteenth-century Cathedral of Saint Sophia, the Transfiguration Cathedral with its neo-Byzantine domes, the old water tower, and the Gagarin Park and botanical garden overlooking the river. A walk out to the Hunters' Rock viewpoint above the Teteriv gorge is a local ritual, especially in autumn.
The regional economy rests on granite quarrying and stone working, timber, paper, food processing and confectionery, and light manufacturing. Trolleybuses and buses serve the city, the main highway between Kyiv and the Polish border passes alongside it, and rail links run to the capital and westward. The Zhytomyr Polytechnic State University, the Ivan Franko State University and a well-known military institute give the city a substantial student population.
Since the full-scale Russian invasion in 2022 Zhytomyr has endured missile strikes and has taken in large numbers of displaced people from other regions, while continuing to function as an administrative and educational centre.
Green, historic and resilient, Zhytomyr is a rewarding stop for travellers exploring Ukraine beyond Kyiv.
