Zwolle is the capital and largest city of the province of Overijssel in the eastern Netherlands. Situated at the confluence of the Zwarte Water and Vecht rivers, with the IJssel nearby, the city has long been defined by its relationship with water and its strategic position as a crossroads between different parts of the country. The Stedelijk Museum Zwolle offers an excellent overview of the city's art and cultural history, while the Museum de Fundatie, housed in a neoclassical palace with a striking modern oval extension on its roof, has become one of the most visited art museums in the Netherlands.

Culturally, Zwolle is a vibrant city with a busy programme of festivals, concerts, and events. The Blauwvingerfestival and various music and arts events throughout the year reflect an active and engaged cultural community. The city centre, with its lively Grote Markt and surrounding streets, supports a thriving café, restaurant, and retail scene that draws shoppers and visitors from across the region.

Zwolle is an exceptionally well-connected city, serving as a major railway junction where lines from Amsterdam, Utrecht, Groningen, Leeuwarden, Enschede, and Deventer converge.
